How to make money with video editing in Nigeria

By the Korareel team · Updated

Short video is how Nigerian music, films, comedy and businesses get noticed now, and most of the people making that content don't have time to edit it. If you can cut a clip that holds attention for 15 seconds, that's a skill people pay for. You can start on a phone.

What you need to start

  • A phone with enough storage. A laptop helps but isn't required.
  • A free editing app: CapCut or VN are the most common.
  • Good data or Wi-Fi for uploads. Edit offline, then upload when you're on a better connection.
  • 3–5 example clips to show people what you can do.

Skills that make a clip earn

  • A strong first two seconds. Start on the best moment: the punchline, the hook of the song, the plot twist. Don't start with an intro.
  • Captions. Many people watch with the sound off. Big, readable captions keep them watching.
  • 9:16, 15–45 seconds. Vertical, full screen and short. Cut every pause.
  • One idea per clip. One joke, one scene, one hook. If a video has five good moments, make five clips.
A clip that earns: the best moment in the first 2 seconds, no pauses, captions all through.
The same clip, two openings. Big captions and the best bit first keep people watching.

Way 1: Clip for brands and get paid per view

On a clipping platform like Korareel, brands upload their content (a new song, a film trailer, a podcast episode) and set a rate per 1,000 views. You make clips, post them on your own TikTok, Reels or Shorts, and earn for every verified view, for example ₦50,000 for 50,000 views at ₦1,000 per 1,000.

This is the easiest way to start because you don't have to find clients. The content is provided, and a good edit is what earns. Read more about how content clipping works.

Way 2: Edit for creators and businesses

Podcasters, pastors, comedians, coaches and small businesses post long videos and need them turned into short clips every week. Offer a simple package, for example "10 short clips a week from your videos", with a fixed weekly or monthly price.

  1. Pick 5 people whose content you like and who post long videos.
  2. Make 2 free clips from their existing videos.
  3. Send them the clips with a short, polite message and your price.
  4. Get paid before you deliver after the first job, or ask for half upfront.
Pitch with free samples, then offer a simple weekly package.

Pricing your work

Charge per clip or per week, not per hour. Start low enough to win your first 2–3 clients, then raise your price as your examples get better. Write down what's included (number of clips, captions, revisions) so there are no arguments later.

Questions people ask

Can I make money editing videos on my phone in Nigeria?

Yes. CapCut and VN on a phone are enough to make clips that brands and creators pay for. A laptop makes long projects faster, but you can start without one.

What's the fastest way to earn from editing with no clients?

Pay-per-view clipping. Brands provide the content and pay for verified views on clips you post, so you don't have to find clients first.

Do I need to be on camera?

No. Clipping and editing are behind-the-camera work. You edit other people's content, with permission, and post it.
